Which tool to choose
Here the problem is the file, not the AI, so the choice isn't between assistants but between ways of fixing the file.
- If it's an unsupported format, you need a converter: you transform the file into a common format and then upload it normally.
- If it's damaged, you need the program that created it (or a compatible one) to reopen and resave it, or an alternative source from which to recover the same content.
Distinguishing the two cases is the first step: "unsupported" is a translation problem, "damaged" is an integrity problem. The solutions are different, and applying the wrong one wastes time.
How to do it
From a computer or a phone proceed in order, from the simplest case to the most serious.
- Read exactly what the error says. "Format not supported" and "damaged file" are different problems: the first concerns the type of file, the second the fact that the file is corrupted.
- If it's the format, convert it. Images to JPG or PNG, documents to PDF. For images, the quickest way is to take a screenshot of it: the screenshot is always in a standard format. For documents, open and use "Save as" choosing PDF.

Instead of insisting with the AI, he goes back to the colleague's email and notices that the file was also inside a second attachment in another format. He opens that one, it works, he uploads it into the AI without problems. The solution wasn't repairing the broken file but finding the same content from a healthy source. If the error says "format not supported"
The AI can't read that kind of file. Convert it into a common format with a free online service (search "convert [your format] to PDF" or "to JPG"). For images in strange formats, the screenshot is the instant conversion: capture the image on the screen and upload the screenshot, which is always standard.
If the file opens in its program but won't upload into the AI
Then it's not damaged, it's the format or the size. Resave it as PDF and try again. If it's large, shrink it. The fact that it opens for you but the AI rejects it is the sign that the content is healthy and the problem is only in the form you present it in.
If no program can open the file
It's truly damaged and repairing it by hand is rarely possible for someone who isn't technical. Bet everything on recovery from an alternative source: a previous version (many programs and cloud services keep a version history), the original email, a backup. If you have a cloud service, look for the "version history" feature: often there's a healthy copy from a few hours earlier.
If it's an important file and you have no other copies
Before giving up, there are services and programs for repairing specific file types (damaged PDFs, corrupted Word documents, ruined photos). Search "repair damaged [file type]" and try a reliable service. They don't guarantee recovery, but on files that are only partly damaged they sometimes work. For files with confidential data, choose carefully whom you entrust the document to.

When a file gives trouble, always do the mother test: try to open it on your device before giving it to the AI.
