How to do it (find out and stop it)
What "training on your chats" means: your conversations become material with which the company refines the future model. It doesn't mean another user will read your sentence, but that that text enters the pot that shapes the system's later answers.
Start from the right assumption: by default it's on. On personal plans training is active until you disable it. Paying for a subscription doesn't turn it off on its own.
Find the switch. From a browser or from an app the concept is identical, the labels change:
- ChatGPT: profile, Settings, data controls (Data Controls), "Improve the model for everyone" switch.
- Claude: name at the bottom left, Settings, "Privacy", "Help improve Claude" switch.
- Gemini: Google account, "Gemini Apps Activity", set it to pause.
Turn it off. From then on the new conversations no longer feed the next round of training.
If the interface has changed and you can't find the entry, in the text box ask the AI itself: "Where do I find the setting to not use my chats in training?" and have it give you the updated path.
The working syntax for a quick check on a service you don't know:
Tell me concretely, without making things up:
- do you use my conversations to train your models?
- by default is it on or off for my type of plan?
- what is the exact menu path to turn it off?
A concrete example
Luca writes on Claude to prepare a lawsuit: names, amounts, client details. He believes the paid Pro plan protects him. He opens Settings, "Privacy", and finds "Help improve Claude" on. He turns it off. From then on the new conversations are no longer used for training. For the most delicate case he adds the temporary chat, so that text doesn't even stay in the history.
When it does NOT work (and how to fix it)
If you think the opt-out also applies to the past
Turning off the switch only acts forward. The conversations already used in a completed training round can't be pulled back out. Fix: act as soon as possible, so you reduce how much of your material goes in from now on.
If you've turned it off but a chat is retained anyway
Some companies reserve the right to use a conversation even after the opt-out if it's flagged for a security review or if you flag it with feedback. Fix: don't use thumbs up/down on confidential content and, for the truly sensitive cases, use the temporary chat or a business plan.
A tip from someone who actually uses it
Treat the training switch as the first thing to check on every new account, even before writing anything real in it. And recheck it after the big updates: it happens that a change in terms of service turns the option back on and asks you to choose again.
Frequently asked questions
If the AI trains on my chats, can someone reread what I wrote?
Not wholesale and not with your name and surname next to it. The text enters an automatic process that improves the model. A limited share can be reviewed by people for quality or security. The concrete risk isn't the curious employee, it's that confidential information ends up shaping a system from which it never comes out again.
Are free accounts used more than paid ones?
On the point of training, personal plans, free or paid, are treated similarly: on by default. The real difference is made by business and enterprise plans, where training on content is excluded by contract.
Does turning off training worsen the answers I get?
It's the widespread fear, and it's unfounded. The switch decides whether your chats help train the future models, not how good the model you use today is. The answers you get now stay identical: turning it off doesn't penalize you, it only removes your data from the training material.
