How to do it
Deleting from the history and deleting from the servers are two different moments: the first is immediate and you do it, the second is a technical window of the provider (often about thirty days). From browser or app the concept is identical, the gesture changes.
Export first, if you need a copy. On ChatGPT: profile, Settings, data controls (Data Controls), "Export Data"; you receive a link by email that expires quickly, download it right away. On Claude: initials at the bottom left, Settings, export option. Do it before deleting: afterward there's no going back.
Delete individual chats. On the computer: hover over the conversation, the three dots appear, "Delete." On the phone: hold your finger on the chat until the delete option appears. This applies, with small differences in naming, on all three platforms.
Delete the whole history at once. In the data controls / account settings you'll find the option to delete all conversations. It's irreversible.
Delete the account, if you want to disappear completely. In the account settings there's the permanent closure: it removes the profile and associated data according to the provider's timing.
If you can't find the option because the interface has changed, ask the AI in the box: "Where is the option now to delete all my conversations and to export my data?".
The operational syntax to be guided step by step:
I want to delete my history on [platform name] and download a copy first.
Tell me in the right order: how I export the data, how I delete individual chats,
how I delete the whole history, and how long it takes for the data to disappear from the servers.
Only steps you know for certain.
A concrete example
Paolo changes jobs and wants to clean up the ChatGPT account he used at the office. First he exports the data: an archive with all the conversations arrives by email, he saves it to disk. Then he goes into the data controls and deletes the entire history. The chats disappear from his view immediately; the provider completes the removal from the servers in the following weeks. Paolo has his copy and the account is clean.
When it does NOT work (and how to fix it)
If you delete and then realize you needed a chat
Deleted conversations can't be recovered. Fix: there's only prevention. Always export before a mass deletion; for chats you might need, archive them instead of deleting them (where archiving exists, it removes them from view without destroying them).
If the chat disappears from view but you fear it stays on the servers
That's normal: server-side deletion isn't instantaneous, it follows a window of about thirty days, and some data may be retained longer for legal or security obligations. Fix: for content that really must not exist, don't write it in the clear from the start (temporary chat, anonymization).
If you have dozens of chats to delete one by one
Deleting them manually is long. Fix: use the total history deletion if you're fine with wiping everything; there are also browser extensions for bulk deletion, but weigh them carefully because they ask for access to your account.
A tip from someone who actually uses it
Keep the habit of exporting your data now and then, even if you're not deleting anything: it's your backup and it frees you from the platform. The day you want to switch services or close the account, you already have everything and you delete without regrets.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting the chat also remove it from the AI's memory?
No, they're two separate things. The chat is the conversation in the history; the memory is the summary of facts about you that the system saved separately. You also have to clear the memory in its settings, otherwise the recollections stay even after you've deleted the conversations.
If I delete the account does the data already used for training disappear too?
No, and it's the point that disappoints the most. Deleting the account removes the profile and the conversations, but what has already been used to train a model can't be extracted after the fact. Deletion protects the future, it doesn't rewrite the past: that's why it matters to turn off training before, not after.
