They're not equivalent: it depends on what you need.
You want proposals tied to real places near you (venues, festivals, weekend events): choose Gemini. It's connected to Google services, so it reasons better about places, maps and local searches. The free version of the app provides its fast model with a daily quota; the exact name of the version changes often, so don't trust the number but what it lets you do.
You want creative brainstorming, original themes, table games, a tailor-made evening schedule: choose ChatGPT. Even on the free tier it searches the web for up-to-date information, reads files and images you upload, and generates images. The catch: free accounts have a message cap that resets after a few hours, so it's worth concentrating everything into a few well-made prompts.
For the vast majority of cases you can plan a night out with friends for free with either of the two. If you just need to decide the date and place together, skip the AI and use a poll app (I'll explain that further down).
How to do it
Whether on a browser or in the app, the path is the same:
- Open the chosen tool (chatgpt.com or the Gemini app) and start a new chat.
- Paste the prompt below after changing the values in italics to your own.
- Read the proposals. If they're too generic, reply with one more constraint ("no restaurants, we're already full of dinners" or "max 20 euros each").
- When you like a proposal, ask for the operational details: what's needed, how much it costs, how to book.
- Ask the AI to turn the 3-4 finalist ideas into a message to paste into the WhatsApp group.
Check: if after point 3 the ideas are still vague ("go to dinner", "have a game night"), the prompt is too open. Add the city, budget and what you've already done recently.
The operating syntax:
You are an organizer of nights out with friends. Propose 7 concrete ideas for
Saturday night in Bologna. There are 5 of us, ages 28-32, budget 25 euros each.
We have a car. We want something different from the usual pizza, we like
games, live music and eating well. Weather: rain forecast.
For each idea give me: name of the activity, why it works for us, approximate
cost per person, and what we need to book or bring. Search the web for
venues and events actually open this weekend in the area and indicate the
source. No generic proposals: I want precise names and places.
If you want a home activity (no going out), this variant works well:
Organize me an evening at home for 6 friends, budget 15 euros each,
duration about 4 hours. We want a theme that ties together food, a group game
and a fun challenge. Give me the hour-by-hour schedule, the shopping
list split per person, and the rules of the game explained so that
anyone can grasp them right away.
A concrete example
Five friends in Bologna, a rainy Saturday, tired of the usual dinners. I pasted the first prompt into ChatGPT, asking it to search the web. Among the proposals: an indoor "axe throwing" venue, a pool hall with a kitchen, and a board-game night at a board-game bar (ludobar).
The first idea was appealing but cost too much. I replied: "Axe throwing goes over budget, remove it. Keep the other two and add one with live music." The AI swapped in a live set at a jazz venue and gave the hours and the cover charge.
I closed with: "Make me a message for the group with these 3 options and a poll." Result copied and pasted into WhatsApp in thirty seconds, with the chat's native poll. Decision made by evening.
When it does NOT work (and how to fix it)
If the AI invents venues or events that don't exist
It's the most common risk: names of plausible places that are closed or never existed. Fix: in the prompt always write "search the web and indicate the source", so the AI works on real results instead of from memory. Then, before booking, check the name and hours on Google Maps. Manual verification remains indispensable on both tools: hours and closures change fast.
If the ideas are bland and generic
It means you've given few constraints. The AI fills the gaps with the average. Fix: add what you've already done ("no aperitivo, we did it last week"), the real budget and a detail about the group ("three of us are vegetarian", "two hate dancing"). The more boundaries you give, the more tailored the proposals become.
If you've run out of free messages
On ChatGPT free, once you hit the message cap, you have to wait for the quota to reset. Immediate fix: switch to Gemini, which has separate quotas. Alternatively, before starting again, concentrate all the related questions into a single rich prompt instead of breaking them up: you get much more done within the same limit.
If you see strange sponsored links
Free AI apps can show paid results, especially when you ask for local products or services: they usually appear as sponsored links at the bottom of the answer. Don't confuse them with neutral advice: treat them as advertising and always verify the venue separately on Google Maps.
A tip from someone who actually uses it
The mistake is asking "give me ideas" and stopping at the first list. The real value comes in the second and third back-and-forth, when you discard, refine and have the AI choose for you ("you decide the best one for a group tired at the end of the week and explain why to me").
